So during World Cup 2002 I decided to surprise him by making one using styrofoam since that's the easiest material to carve the basic shape of the trophy. I'm quite a hand guy when it comes to DIY since I'm a contractor but this totally different when it comes to scale models as you need to bit of have artistic skillls to make one.
It was hell of a daunting task as I started carving the styrofoam but finally managed to finish it. I painted it in gold and did the finishing of the trophy. To be frank it looked kind of funny as I did it free hand without scaling it exactly according to the actual size but nevertheless the shape is there and not bad for a non artistic person to make one for the first time.
The next day I showed it to him and I can still remember his eyes popping out full with excitement and surprise the first time he laid eyes on it even though it doesn't exactly the same but it was enough for him. Sadly though I didn't take any photos of the cup and him at that moment.
For me it was a proud moment and an accomplishment to be able to do it for my son.
He proudly carried it every where possible and showed it to his friends until one day he told me that some of his friends wants to order and buy the trophy due to th World Cup fever at that time. I was surprised but politely turn down their request as I had no spare time to do it due to work commitments.
By the time World Cup 2006 my son was already 13 and we were watching England playing at that time.Suddenly he turn to me and asked,"You know what papa, some of my friends are still asking about the world cup that you made, You can make money out of it". I smiled and told him that if I were to sell a replica of the trophy I must make sure that it looks the same or almost the same as the real one and I had no time to do it but maybe the next world cup tournament I might work on it.
World Cup 2010 came and the fever is on again. Office workers are either on sick leave or somewhere back at the office store catching up some sleep due to the late nights watching their favourite team play. By this time my business went through a bad patch and I had difficulties making ends meet. I had a lot of free time as there was no job offers.
Then one day I remembered what my son told me about making money by selling the replicas and said to my self I might as well do it since I had a lot of free time to kill.
So I did some research on how to make the mould for the basic shape of the trophy so at least I could save some time and concerntrate on the detailings more. I did the scaling to the actual size of the trophy and this time I decided to use plaster of paris as the material as it is quite easy to carve the detailings.
Surprisingly it turned out better than I expected in terms of the shape and the whole outlook of it.I used a better quality gold paint to make it shining like the actual one.
Once completed I started to advertise and to post on the internet for the local market and didn't give much thought about it since I still had to work and support my family.
The next day during a meeting with a potential client, calls started coming in enquiring about the trophy. I was startled as I did not expect an overwhelming response for the trophy at all. Orders were pouring in and I had to stop accepting orders as I could not cope with it. What a World Cup Year!
From there on I kept improving working on the trophy and until today I'm still selling the replica on line. International enquiries are starting to come in placing orders for the next World Cup 2014 in Brazil.
I'm still doing my contract job during the day and after work I'll be in my workshop making the trophy.
Looking forward for Brazil 2014 and for you guys who wants a piece of the replica trophy you can email me at mubyn98@gmail.com can visit https://www.facebook.com/FIFAWorldCupReplica
